Based in Siilinjärvi, Finland, Koneneliö Oy is a versatile earthmoving contractor operating on a wide range of infrastructure projects across the country
In recent years, district heating projects have kept both the company's fleet and personnel busy throughout the year.
This type of work demands machines that are versatile, reliable, and capable of adapting to constantly changing jobsite conditions. To meet these requirements, Koneneliö expanded its fleet with a new Cat® 335 excavator, delivered by Avesco Oy to Kuopio in autumn 2025.
The Work Determines the Fleet
Owner Jari Lappeteläinen describes Koneneliö's approach in practical terms:
"We go wherever the work is. District heating projects have provided a great deal of work in recent years, and they often require specialized equipment as well as efficient excavation and hauling solutions," says Lappeteläinen.
Depending on the season, Koneneliö employs around 30 people, and every equipment investment is made with the company's overall fleet strategy in mind. The new Cat 335 is part of a fleet of approximately 20 machines.
A Long History with Caterpillar and Avesco
Caterpillar has been a familiar brand to Koneneliö since the early 2000s.
"I believe it was back in 2003 when we bought our first Caterpillar machine from Hannu Jurvelin. Now we've returned to the brand—we purchased a wheeled excavator last spring, and this autumn we received this new 36-tonne Cat 335 short-radius excavator," says Lappeteläinen.
Avesco's Kuopio branch together with its nationwide service network played an important role in the purchasing decision.
"When you're working all over Finland, you need a reliable service network. And that's exactly what Avesco offers," Lappeteläinen explains.
Hannu Jurvelin, Sales Representative at Avesco Oy in the Kuopio region, has worked with Koneneliö for many years.
"We delivered their first Caterpillar machines more than 20 years ago. The trust has remained strong on both sides, even though it's been some time since our previous deal," says Jurvelin.
Practical Benefits on the Jobsite
The Cat 335 is equipped with HCST quick couplers, allowing hydraulic work tools to be changed directly from the cab without disconnecting hydraulic hoses. This makes daily work more efficient, especially on jobsites where tasks change frequently.
"Changing work tools is quick and effortless. It has a direct impact on productivity and also improves safety," says Jurvelin.
Operator Appreciates Speed and Visibility
Machine operator Henri Savolainen has been operating the Cat 335 at a waterfront development project in Itkonniemi, Kuopio, where land is being reclaimed along the shores of Lake Kallavesi for future construction.
"The machine responds quickly, and visibility is excellent in every direction," says Savolainen.
Having operated several different brands, including Volvo, Hitachi and Komatsu, he is impressed with the new machine.
"It definitely makes my top three," he says.
He gives particular praise to the quick attachment changes.
"There's no need to climb out of the cab or disconnect hydraulic hoses. It makes using the hydraulic hammer much more convenient because switching attachments takes so little effort," Savolainen explains.
Fleet, Service and Trust
For Koneneliö, the Cat 335 is an integral part of a carefully planned fleet strategy.
"Combined with Avesco's comprehensive service and aftermarket support network, it helps us succeed on demanding infrastructure projects across Finland. Whenever we need assistance, we know help is available—no matter where we're working," Lappeteläinen concludes.
