New Cat® D8 Next Generation Dozer at Work

Greater Efficiency and Operator Comfort on the Jobsite

The future is literally being built at the Port of Rauma. A new artificial island is taking shape offshore, with its foundations being constructed by the heavy equipment of Louhintahiekka Oy. One of the key machines driving the project forward is the company's latest investment, the new Cat® D8 Next Generation dozer, which is perfectly suited for demanding earthmoving applications like this.
According to Fleet Manager Antti Puputti, Louhintahiekka is a Finnish earthmoving contractor with around 100 employees, specializing in large and technically demanding infrastructure projects across the country.
"We operate a fleet of around 60 machines, about half of which are Caterpillar. Our first Cat machines arrived in the 1970s, and the brand has been an integral part of our operations ever since. The reason is simple—they just work."

The Ultimate Machine for Earth Moving

The Cat D8 sits at the heavy end of Louhintahiekka's fleet and truly excels in bulk earthmoving, fill work and large-scale port construction projects. Its powerful engine, optimized powertrain and exceptional drawbar pull make it a highly cost-effective solution when large volumes of material need to be moved efficiently and with complete control.
Puputti summarizes the machine's biggest strength:
"If you look at tonnes moved per litre of fuel, this machine is in a class of its own. When you're moving large amounts of material, the Cat D8 does it more efficiently than anything else."

A Quieter, Smarter Dozer

The Cat D8 has a heritage dating back to the 1930s, and the latest Next Generation model introduces its biggest advancements in the operator station and machine control systems. The new D8 offers a significantly quieter cab, improved visibility and a modern touchscreen interface that brings a new level of intelligence to the machine.
Automatic operator assist features—including Traction Control, Load Assist and Stable Blade—make dozing both easier and more precise. These systems continuously adjust machine traction and blade position according to ground conditions and load, reducing wear while improving fuel efficiency.

Avesco Oy Operator Trainer Tero Ahtiainen explains that the redesigned cab and intuitive control logic help operators work both more safely and more efficiently. The touchscreen provides a clear overview of machine performance and allows operators to adjust assist functions with just a few taps.

Precision Taken to the Next Level

Louhintahiekka's D8 Next Generation is equipped with a 3D grade control system that enables operators to shape the terrain precisely according to the digital site model. This minimizes rework and delivers significant time savings on site. According to Puputti, 3D technology has become an essential tool for modern earthmoving.

“When you're working directly from the digital design model, accuracy improves and unnecessary work disappears. Getting it right the first time makes a real difference in both productivity and fuel consumption.”

The company also makes extensive use of fleet connectivity and data analytics. With the VisionLink fleet management system, Louhintahiekka monitors fuel consumption, idle time and machine fault codes in real time. This data helps optimize machine utilization, schedule preventive maintenance and ensure that equipment remains productive in the field.

A Service Agreement That Keeps the Jobsite Moving

Reliable maintenance plays a critical role in keeping Louhintahiekka's operations productive. With equipment working across Finland, unexpected breakdowns can quickly become costly. For this reason, the company has outsourced maintenance of its Cat fleet to Avesco Oy under a service agreement that also covers the new D8 dozer.

According to Puputti, the arrangement has proven to be the only practical solution.
“It would be impossible for our own maintenance team to service machines efficiently when they're spread across the country. Someone would always be in the wrong place. The service agreement ensures our machines stay in top condition and keeps downtime to a minimum.”

He also highlights the smooth cooperation with Avesco.
"Communication has always been straightforward, and any issues have been resolved quickly. That's what really matters—help is available immediately, and our machines stay up and running."

Operator Training Maximizes Productivity

The full potential of modern equipment can only be realized when operators know how to take advantage of its capabilities. Avesco provides comprehensive operator training for contractors like Louhintahiekka, ensuring that every feature of the Cat D8 can be used to its fullest.
According to Ahtiainen, the touchscreen display also serves as a built-in learning tool by providing real-time guidance and recommendations for machine settings directly from the cab. With proper training, operators quickly gain confidence in the new technology, resulting in greater accuracy, lower fuel consumption and longer machine life.
