A second life for a Cat 330D excavator with a thorough rebuild

Based in Siilinjärvi, Maanrakennus V. Inola Oy is an experienced expert in earthworks, water construction, and infrastructure building. The company has been operating in Eastern and Central Finland for 50 years. Its comprehensive fleet includes 27 earthmoving machines, the majority of which are Caterpillars, supported by nine trucks. According to CEO Juha Inola, maintaining a modern fleet and meeting emissions requirements on job sites are key priorities for the company.
A Comprehensive Rebuild Tailored for Contracting Use
—
In 2024, Maanrakennus V. Inola Oy began searching for a used 40-ton long-reach excavator for its own contracting operations, but no suitable options were available on the market. Eventually, a technically worn-out Cat 330D was found on an auction site, and a rebuild plan was initiated in collaboration with Avesco. The main goal was to ensure that the machine's emissions class could be upgraded to Stage V. Through Avesco, the company was connected with Proventia, who provided a functional solution to meet the emissions requirements.
A Rebuilt Machine Ready to Serve for Years to Come
The complete rebuild of the Cat 330D was carried out in close cooperation between Maanrakennus V. Inola and Avesco. The customer took full responsibility for restoring the base machine: all the boom’s worn pivot points were welded, machined, and reassembled with new bearings and pins. Inola also handled sandblasting and painting the machine prior to final assembly.
Avesco, in turn, performed a RePower engine rebuild to ensure clean combustion and optimal compatibility with the new emissions control system. At the same time, Avesco also overhauled the machine’s hydraulic cylinders at its Kuopio facility. As part of the comprehensive rebuild, Avesco installed Proventia’s NOxBUSTER® emissions reduction system, enabling the engine’s emissions class to be upgraded from Stage 3B to Stage V—an important step, as Caterpillar currently does not offer a retrofit solution for this model.
Proventia’s NOxBUSTER® combines two powerful technologies: a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. Together, they effectively reduce particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), making it possible to meet today’s stringent emissions standards.
Thanks to the thorough rebuild, the company acquired a machine in excellent condition with a reasonable investment. After completion, the excavator went straight to work on mass replacement and noise barrier construction, and is now continuing operations at a bio terminal worksite in Suonenjoki.
Emissions Upgrade Brings Environmental Benefits and New Opportunities
The retrofit emissions system supplied by Proventia has functioned flawlessly from the moment it was commissioned, and the operator only needs to ensure the urea tank is refilled. The system has achieved an average nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction of 93%—exactly as promised. As a result, the machine now meets even the most stringent emissions requirements on today’s job sites.
Successful Collaboration and Versatile Support from Avesco
According to Inola, Avesco’s aftermarket support worked extremely well throughout the project, even though a significant portion of the rebuild was carried out in the company’s own workshop.
Juha Inola considers the project a success:
“We acquired a very good used machine at a reasonable price, and now it also meets current emissions standards. This solution allows us to continue using the machine efficiently in our own operations for years to come.”
Among the many services Avesco offers for Cat machines, the company actively uses Avesco’s EasyService maintenance agreements, with machines serviced regularly every 500 hours. Fleet monitoring is handled via the VisionLink application, and spare parts are ordered easily and cost-effectively through the parts.cat.com online store.
