Comprehensive Contracting

Hyvinkään Tieliuska Oy operates a large fleet of machinery in the earthmoving and infra projects in the Helsinki region.

Hyvinkään Tieliuska has for a long time trusted Caterpillar to provide their machinery. Pictured is the Cat 320F excavator working on piping in Espoo.

Hyvinkään Tieliuska offers high-quality Torpanpiha growing beds from its soil stations in Espoo and Vantaa. Material handling and loading is done using Caterpillar loaders.

“Building in the Helsinki area will continue in the future because of people constantly moving there and existing structures are renovated, so there is a lot to do, but one of the big challenges is finding additional employees. Experience and our own expert staff together with efficient machinery guarantees the best result and always on time”, promises Markku Hurskainen, Managing director at Hyvinkään Tieliuska Oy.

In August in Espoo’s Kilo, there was a large pipe construction site, which will be finished towards the end of the year. “The job has advanced according to schedule while still ensuring top quality”, says Vili Vuoriheimo, Hyvinkään Tieliuska’s work supervisor.

Along with their own machinery, Hyvinkään Tieliuska uses the Cat Rental service: A Cat 318 rented from Avesco doing yard work in Kauniainen.

Valto Räsänen has worked as a driver for Hyvinkään Tieliuska for the past 31 years. “We have a good team spirit and the company has a can-do attitude. These new Caterpillars have more advanced hydraulics, lower fuel consumption and less emissions thanks to their innovative engine technology. And the cab is comfy even during longer days because it has good ergonomics and is well equipped.”

Hyvinkään Tieliuska uses about 25 Grandall machines for finishing road slopes and greenery. These machines are often also used outside of Helsinki - the picture shows work being done in Lappeenranta. The company also imports these machines and further equips them for use in e.g. the mining and steel industry.

Hyvinkään Tieliuska Oy is a family owned company with a 45-year history. It offers reliable earthworks contracting and infra building mainly in the Helsinki area.

“The original business idea was to offer high-quality and efficient sloping for the finishing of road slopes and railway banks; this is where the still ongoing Gradall machinery import, sales and special equipping stems from. High quality and efficiency are still at the heart of our company, even if during the decades our operations have expanded and become more varied. In addition to different earthworks projects we offer our expertise for environmental construction e.g. in mass stabilisation as well as the high-quality Torpanpiha growing beds from our soil stations in Espoo and Vantaa”, says Hyvinkään Tieliuska Oy’s Managing Director Markku Hurskainen, who began working for the company in 1998.

The Operations Keep Growing

There are about 130 persons employed by the steadily growing Hyvinkään Tieliuska and its turnover is over 32 million Euros. Additionally, there is a good and long working relationship with several subcontractors. The company has more than 70 machines for loading and digging, 30 of which are excavators and about 25 of which are Gradall machines.

“We can have dozens of ongoing projects at the same time - right now the work is mainly infra projects, like building streets and surface structures as well as pipe projects. So our fleet has been growing constantly and even now I don’t think there are any idle machines. Building in the Helsinki area will continue in the future because of people constantly moving there and existing structures are renovated, so there is a lot to do, but one of the big challenges is finding additional employees. Experience and our own expert staff together with efficient machinery guarantees the best result and always on time”, promises Hurskainen.

Caterpillar is Number One in Excavators and Loaders

Hyvinkään Tieliuska has for a long time trusted Caterpillar to provide their excavators and loaders.

“These past years, we have steadily moved towards having only one brand of machinery, which is a clear advantage as the machines are good and the cooperation with Avesco works seamlessly. Lately Avesco has really invested in product support and the more efficient operation of field maintenance, which is beginning to have a positive impact on operations. We use Caterpillar’s VisionLink system, which e.g. shows the machines location, working hours, fuel consumption, possible fault codes, maintenance calculator and much more enabling condition monitoring and prediction of future procedures”, says Hurskainen.

The excavators at Hyvinkään Tieliuska are used for about 1,500 hours per year and the change limit is 10,000 hours - often a well working machine will be kept as backup.

“A good example of this is the track-driven Cat 320 LRR from the year 2011, which has clocked over 10,000 hours and there hasn’t been any real technical problems. The machine has practically no idle running time thanks to a good driver, so all of the operation hours have been accumulated doing actual work”, states Hurskainen.

Next Generation Machines are Even Better

Recently, a successful transition has been made in excavators and loaders to next generation Cat machines, which are bought from the machine seller at Avesco, Tuomas Kalliopää.

“They have had us convinced from the beginning with their efficiency, and as the working hours have accumulated, with their reliability. Working conditions for the operator have yet again reached new levels and advanced digital technology is used, which is why everyone wants to drive them. All of our new Cat machines come with a maintenance contract and 8,000 hour extended warranties. The machines are equipped with Novatron 3D machine control systems, because we are in the process of further digitalising our operations. 3D systems are a big help not only in operating but also in documenting, the amount of which has in-creased hugely in infra projects”, says Hurskainen.

Rental Machines Provide Flexible Additional Capacity

Along with their own machinery, Hyvinkään Tieliuska uses the Cat Rental service: “We almost always have rented Cat machines to provide flexible additional capacity when necessary. We rent the machines for days or weeks or even longer, even a year, after which we have also bought some of the machines for ourselves.”
